In the 1920s, Grosse Ile was a thriving island community in the Detroit River. But beneath the surface, a dark secret was lurking. Over a period of several years, several young women were found murdered, their bodies left in shallow graves. The case became known as the Grosse Ile Murders, and it remains one of the most chilling unsolved mysteries in Michigan history.

In his new book, Dr. Jeffrey Barnes takes a fresh look at the Grosse Ile Murders. He examines the evidence, interviews witnesses, and offers a new theory about who the killer might have been. Barnes' book is a gripping account of a cold case that has haunted Grosse Ile for nearly a century.

The Victims

The victims of the Grosse Ile Murders were all young women who had been living on or visiting the island. The first victim was 18-year-old Frances Hall, who was found murdered in 1922. Her body was found in a shallow grave in the woods near the island's airport. The second victim was 16-year-old Mildred Beets, who was found murdered in 1925. Her body was found in a shallow grave in the woods near the island's ferry dock. The third victim was 20-year-old Minnie Krause, who was found murdered in 1927. Her body was found in a shallow grave in the woods near the island's water treatment plant.

All three of the victims had been strangled, and each of their bodies bore signs of sexual assault. The killer had also taken the time to bury each of the victims in a shallow grave, which suggested that he had a personal connection to the island.

The Investigation

The Grosse Ile Murders quickly became a top priority for the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. However, despite the department's best efforts, the case remained unsolved for decades. The investigation was hampered by a lack of physical evidence and a shortage of witnesses who were willing to come forward.

In the 1960s, the case was reopened by the Michigan State Police. The state police conducted a new investigation, and they were able to identify several new suspects. However, none of the suspects were ever charged with the murders.

Theories

Over the years, there have been many theories about who the Grosse Ile killer might have been. Some people believe that the killer was a local resident who knew the victims. Others believe that the killer was a transient who came to the island and committed the murders before fleeing. Still others believe that the killer was a member of a satanic cult.

Dr. Jeffrey Barnes' book offers a new theory about the identity of the killer. Barnes believes that the killer was a man named John Robinson. Robinson was a local resident who had a history of violence and mental illness. Barnes presents evidence that suggests that Robinson was responsible for the murders, but he was never charged with the crimes.

The Grosse Ile Murders remain one of the most chilling unsolved mysteries in Michigan history. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the killer has never been identified. Dr. Jeffrey Barnes' book offers a new theory about the identity of the killer, but it is ultimately up to the reader to decide who they believe is responsible for these heinous crimes.

Grosse Ile is a gripping account of a cold case that has haunted Grosse Ile for nearly a century. Barnes' book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in true crime or Michigan history.
